Author's Notes
2013 was the very first year I started doing personal charts. That year was marked by a lot of experimentation, in terms of format and frequency. At first, I tried to do a weekly top 25, but only managed to keep it going for 2 weeks. Afterwards, I began making simple Top 10s, with extremely infrequent updates. Some a week apart, others nearly a month apart.
Finally, on August 11th 2013, I settled on a Daily Top 10 format. Every day (or so), I would sit down and write down the ten songs that felt most impactful that day. Since I had not yet found any data aggregators like Last.FM at the time, estimating my top songs was the best method I had of creating charts.
As for my music taste in 2013... it's very chauvinistic, I won't lie. Lots of indie/alternative/rock and oldies. Not a lot of pop or even girlies at this time. I was still slowly warming up to the idea that pop music wasn't trash, but there were some big disruptions (see Rihanna, Maroon 5 and Serena Ryder, just to name a few!) We're definitely still a few years away from big pop music breakthroughs though.
Fun fact: I actually banned instrumental songs (new age, relaxation music, video game OSTs, and so on) from charting in my charts that year. That was because 95% of my music listening in high school was those kinds of songs. I was trying to push myself to seek out more songs with vocals, which I think worked out quite well honestly! This decision would be reversed after 2013, however.
